Following the success of Operation: Spearhead, the USIF had established a firm beachhead on planet Atlas, and began combat operations to liberate the planet. Acting on captured intelligence, the USIF initiated a bold plan to severely cripple the rebel Arm fleet one decisive attack. Deploying the elite 1st Recon Platoon to carry out this mission, the USIF intended to capture a Titan Array communications center. Once captured, the US Imperial Navy's Artificial Intelligence, code-named Mother, would upload false rendezvous coordinates to the Arm fleet, where they would unknowingly move into a US Imperial ambush.
In the event, 1st Recon Platoon was successful in both clearing the surrounding area of Arm troops and capturing the Titan Array, where they were able to hack a control console and allow Mother to transmit the false coordinates. The Arm fleet was later promptly destroyed when it was ambushed by the US Imperial Navy's Columbia Battlegroup.
The near-total destruction of the Arm of Orion fleet only made a bad situation worse for the ruthless rebels, as they were no longer able quickly to move troops from planet to planet. The Arm rebels were also subject to intense orbital bombardment by US Imperial ships, as these ships able to move with impunity due to the US Imperial Navy's orbital and aerial superiority.
Soon after, USIF intelligence detected a large Arm of Orion supply base. Hoping to further cripple the Arm's war efforts, the USIF deployed 1st Recon Platoon to carry out a destructive night raid, code-named Operation: Decommission.
